Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines efficient as: “productive without waste.” When speaking in terms of a heat pump (or traditional AC system) unit’s efficiency, we are referring to the waste of energy — and energy means money. So when your unit starts losing efficiency, you start losing money. But what causes rising energy bills, and more importantly, what can you do about it?

  1. Dirty Condensing Unit. The outdoor part of your heat pump system is called the condensing unit. Over time, the condensing unit can accumulate dust and debris, making it harder for the system to function properly and leading to increased energy use. A chemical coil cleaning done by a professional can help improve energy efficiency and extend the life of your unit.

  2. Lack of Preventative Maintenance. Just like cars need regular oil changes and our bodies need routine checkups, HVAC systems also require preventative maintenance. Regular filter changes, part replacements, and system checks can greatly improve efficiency and help catch issues before they turn into costly repairs.

  3. Age of the Unit. No matter how vigilant you are with maintenance, every heat pump system eventually loses efficiency with age. Between 10–15 years, your heat pump unit will be nearing the end of its life expectancy. If energy bills start to rise and repairs become more frequent, it may be time to consider an upgrade to a high-performance system.
